Developed By NASA Wi-Fi Chip Will be Able to Extend the Autonomous Operation of Portable Gadgets

NASA specialists have created a Wi-Fi chip for portable devices, which consumes 1,000 times less energy than conventional chips, plus three times the bandwidth increases. The principle of operation of the chip developers have explained.

To get started on the web, smart phone or smart watches should start to generate a signal, sending it to the router. Then send the request is processed by the router, which in turn generates a response signal. A new Wi-Fi chip does not generate its own signal, but instead reflects the radio router platform, using it as their own communication channel.

Most of the work carried out by the router, not the chip, and energy is spent on three orders of magnitude smaller. And also saves time, which in the normal case is required for the generation of wearable device's own signal.

"The idea is to let wearable gadget simply reflect a signal router or cell tower, to reduce energy consumption," says Adrian Tang of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Engineers have created a prototype chip, achieving data transmission speed of 330 Mb / s, which is about three times higher than a conventional Wi-Fi chip wearable devices. Energy to the transfer, as mentioned above, requires 1000 times less.
